A beautifully carved seascape mural sprawled along the tunnel’s walls, ceiling, and floor. Strange constellations had been etched into the shell above Andrew’s head, blazing stars scattered amongst luminous moons and planets. A bit further down were carvings of seabirds. Andrew was familiar with a few of them, but most of the birds looked exotic and foreign. They dove in and out of clouds, alone and in flocks of thousands.
Some birds glided a bit lower down on the tunnel walls, and it was here that man’s conquest of the sea was illustrated. Cheerful fishing boats floated next to ships so grand that they made even The Kingmaker look provincial. Andrew knew enough about ships to see that the detail of the carvings was marvellously accurate. Each element of each ship had been rendered so precisely by the artist that he or she had even carved the correct knot for each piece of rigging. Miniature captains stood at miniature wheels, pouring over elaborate maps whilst their crew worked the sails.
A sharp clap rang out, echoing loudly. The man with the tattoo had stopped, and was looking at Andrew. Realising that he had been dawdling, enthralled with the artistry around him, Andrew jogged forward to catch up, and they continued on. Andrew didn’t want to be left behind and kept up the faster pace, sneaking glances at the walls as he hurried past. Beneath the carvings of the ships were creatures of the sea. Mighty whales, clever dolphins and an amazing array of fish leapt and flitted all around him. The farther down Andrew’s eye went, the weirder the ocean life became. Along the bottom of the wall, Andrew glimpsed odd little fish with huge, milky eyes, and one exceptionally ugly breed that seemed to have a candle dangling from its head. Beneath his jogging feet were etchings of bones, skeletons of those creatures pictured above.
After about twenty minutes of hiking through the eerily fascinating passageway, the tattooed man came to a stop. He waited for both boys to catch up, then put two of his fingers on a particularly splendid carving of a little sea horse, and pressed down. The figure of the seahorse sank into the wall, and a previously unseen door swung open next to it, revealing only darkness.

The passageway was much darker than the cavern had been, but the same amber glow that had suffused the walls in the cavern was also present in the tunnel, and provided a dim but warm light. In some places, the light shone through the shell-like walls much more brightly than in others, and it was as he passed one of these areas that Andrew noticed the carvings. Looking around the passageway, Andrew couldn’t believe that he had missed them.

I’m a runner and I’m boosting my mileage and need to figure out an easy way to map new interesting routes in my neighborhood. Does anyone know a trick for this?
